Even though it’s still winter, it’s not too early to think about getting your home in shape for the summer. You might be in shape on the ice, but when the warm weather comes, you need to be ready. First on the list should be your HVAC system. When the temperatures begin to heat, HVAC specialists get booked up quickly. If there’s ice on the roof, you should think about making your HVAC appointment. In fact, sometimes you can get a deal on setting your schedule early. When you book regular appointments, you’re certain to have someone available. And, your unit operates more efficiently, saving you money.
Winter weather is hard on the exterior AC units.
- Ice and rain may cause rust or corrosion that can damage your system.
- Decomposing debris causes sams and blocks the airflow
- Heavy snow may bend the fins
- Drain hoses may clog making your AC unit unable to drain
All of these make your unit not work at peak condition. If blockages or bent fins are not corrected, your system can overheat in the summer. Just when you need it most.
You can take care of these yourself
Running the furnace in the winter draws dust into the filter and heated air is drier, so more dust collects. Change your filters regularly. Ask your HVAC specialist on what schedule your filter change should take place. Mark it on your calendar and always have a new filter ready. Note: Some filters can be cleaned and replaced. If this is the case, having a second filter to insert while you wash and dry the first one will keep your system cleaner.
Before winter sets in, or as soon as it is warm enough to do so, clear grass, leaves, and twigs away from your outdoor unit.
